An outfit for... eating watermelon caviar!

Last night, I went out to dinner with Gab's family and guess where we ate? At the restaurant where Gab and I work! For once, it was nice to be the ones sitting comfortably and enjoying the food. I got some salmon tartar, chicken fajitas and raspberry nems, which were delicious. Our waitress (well, my coworker!) also gave me a small cup of watermelon caviar, which is really the best sweet treat ever. It looks like tiny jelly bubbles with fruit juice inside, just like that. It has a very bizarre texture, but it's very tasty. I learned that watermelon caviar is molecular gastronomy, which really intrigued me. I did a little bit of research this morning and I discovered that it is possible to make chocolate caviar as well! Awesome, no?

Now, the outfit! Since I had a very bright manicure (totally stolen from fashion blogger Atlantic-Pacific), I kept things simple with my black and white peter pan collar dress and some matching earrings. I like how it looks polished, but not like I'm trying too hard ;)

Ukulele Lady

I was super excited when Sugarlips Apparel kindly offered me this bright yellow dress! It has a very simple, almost basic cut, but every little detail is so me: the hue (you guys know how much I'm obsessed with the colour yellow), the retro neckline, the pockets (!!!), the triangular back opening (!!!!!!!!)... Pretty and practical? Sign me in! I spent a week trying to find the most perfect way to style it. At first, I was considering a honeybee-themed outfit, but I finally chose keep the outfit simple and to pair my new dress with crisp white accessories and mint-coloured nails. Summer is not over, after all! ;)

In other news... I cut my bangs super-short today. Well, they're not that short, but they're about an inch shorter than usual, which is huge for me. I was wearing my pinup swimsuit this morning and started longing for a shorter, fifties-inspired fringe. Then I just cut it. It's a subtle change, but it gives an edgier feel to my signature big bangs. A friend once told my that I *kind of* looked like Rooney Mara, so I used her bangs as my guide for this spontaneous haircut :)

I don't know if I'm going to grow them back to their usual length or cut them even shorter. Besides "I will work my butt off" and "I will become an totally awesome graphic design renegade", my back-to-school manifesto includes "I will let my hair grow down to my waist", so I have a feeling that my bangs will soon become the victim of my hair cutting rages!

i will never love you more than the white album of the beatles

Pardon my french, but fuck yeah it just rained! It refreshed and cooled the air a bit, therefore I can layer a ton of clothes and wear my beloved big bangs without suffocating. Awesome! Plus, I think cloudy days offer the some of the best lighting conditions for outdoor photos. Sure, it doesn't beat the golden hours (the first and last hours of sunlight during the day), but see how soft the lighting looks on these pictures? No harsh shadows, no bright sun flares... I also love how the light is reflected through the little droplets on the leaves. From afar, it makes trees and plants magically glisten!

What is your favourite time and place to take pictures outside?

Fields of Progeny

Quebec is battling another heat wave! This time, it's unbearable. We even beat a record: the last time we reached such high temperatures was 60 years ago! With the humidity, I'm pretty sure we hit 40°C. I worked 8 hours outside today and kept drinking more, more and more water. I got a heat stroke two days ago, so my coworkers were watching me. Miraculously, I survived (that's drama queen in me speaking!).

Taking a cold shower and picking a weather-appropriate outfit was such a release after spending the day in a tight black uniform. However, my blouse kept sticking to my skin and I quickly ditched my cute separates for my good ol' bikini. Now I'm going for a swim! :)

Great Lake Swimmers - Fields of Progeny

Great Lake Swimmers @ L'Impérial de Québec

Last Wednesday, my dad and I attended Great Lake Swimmers' gig. They delivered one of the best live performances I have ever seen at L'Impérial. Their music sounded so rich! I took a few pictures and filmed some videos to share with you.

Except for a few shots during Cults' show last week (I'll post them soon!), it was my first time photographing a live musical performance. I am quite proud of these pictures and I hope you enjoy them, too! :)

Bonus: some videos!

Life Lately // Webcam Edition!

So... I'm back on the blog after being MIA for almost a week. Gab and I spent two days at his grandparents' chalet, which is located neat the famous Lac-Saint-Jean. Our phones were not working and we did not have access to the Internet, so nobody could reach us (ahhhh!). We really enjoyed those two days of peace and quiet! We ate tons of tourtière and blueberry pie, drove a four-wheeler in the woods and chilled out on his grandpa's pontoon boat. We really wanted to stay there for a few more days, but we had to head back to Quebec because of our jobs. I spend the last three days at work (in my all-black waitress uniform) and I was getting very exhausted, but...

... I got a surprise day off today!

... but it's just because I got a mild heat stroke from my three days of waiting tables outside. It's currently super sunny and the temperature reached 35°C, so the only things I can do are laying on my bed and chugging water. Epic fail...

At least I have a new friend to keep me company: an instant camera! I've wanted one for so long, I screamed when I saw the box waiting for me on my desk! Now I must be careful not to waste too much film...

I've been looking for some fun composition and subject ideas, so I picked up this little book I bought at Urban Outfitters last summer. I've never found the time to read every page until today! It's full of great advice and creative ideas for personal photography projects.

The author says he has a slight obsession with full English breakfast and every time he has one, he takes a picture of it: "I have built up a nice collection now". I've never though of building a collection of photos based of the same theme and composition, but now it sounds like a totally awesome idea!

Especially when some eggs and bacon are involved!

I've already posted a picture on the blog's Facebook page, but let me introduce you Mr. Toulouse. Toulouse was a stray 1-year-old shih-poo dog that a shelter rescued from euthanasia. I adopted him last week and named him after French illustrator and painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose work I really admire. We instantly became best friends!

It makes me so sad to know that he would have been put down if the lady at the shelter hadn't found him in time... He's such a gentle, smart dog who's so full of life! If you're thinking about welcoming a little furry friend into your family, please consider adopting one from a shelter. Those dogs and cats have so much love to give and they're just waiting for a caring family to love them in return. Toulouse can't talk, but when he gives me this look, I feel like he's thanking me for offering him a new life (cheesy but true!)...

On a side note - this little baby has been enjoying this very fashionable accessory... He had to be neutered, so he'll be wearing a cone of shame for the next 7 days. I took this picture when the cone was still new to him, but he's a very easy dog and he got used to it. My other dog Billy kept sniffing it and he looked like he was laughing at poor Toulouse! He's taking his big brother role very seriously... Ha!

EDIT: For people living in Quebec City - I adopted Toulouse at Refuge ALSA. The owner is very nice and takes good care of the animals she rescues. ALSA is mostly a rabbit shelter, but there are also dogs and cats waiting for a loving family.

The Bad Luck Top

I found this skull top from high school in the very back of my "random stuff" drawer and decided to style it! This top was my go-to piece of clothing during the Summer of Immaturity, Semi-Rebellion and Totally Stupid Actions. I must say that the very last time I wore it, I was 16 and I nearly killed injured someone by accidentally dropping a firework/firecracker/whatever near the Fontaine de Tourny back in the days when Quebec's national day was still a huge public drunk-fest. Some random guy had put it in my hand (completely out of the blue!) and the next thing I knew, the firework was on the ground and ready to explode. Luckily, nothing happened! Even though he was the one who did something dangerous, the oh-so-brilliant dude kept putting the blame on me and teasing me afterwards. So immature.

This bad-luck top is very different from my usual girly stuff, so I paired it with a midi skirt and a flower crown for a more delicate look. I think I'm going to wear it more often!

Oh, and I got my Button Bizarro order in the mail today! The pieces are just so, so lovely and whimsical. I can't wait to show you the earrings!

Benni Benassi x Iggy Pop - Electro Sixteen

I prefer Iggy's original studio version, but I couldn't find it on Youtube, so I'm putting this remix instead. I used to play it a lot on the student's radio!
